Mr. Amith Ramballie (Manager: DSU)

Amith Ramballie is a Counselling Psychologist who is also a trained Ericksonian Hypnotherapist. He is currently employed as the Senior Student Development Specialist for the Student Services Division at UKZN where he is responsible for managing the HIV and AIDS Programme, the Disability Support Unit and the Central Information Coordinator. He has a passion for holistic student wellness and the use of innovative technology to improve the lives and experiences of students. Along with the HIV and AIDS Programme, he believes in the possibility of inculcating a culture of testing and knowing ones HIV status for the UKZN community so that we can produce healthy graduates who become successful and integrated members of the global community. He is a disability rights advocate for students at UKZN and is working towards a vision of a barrier free learning environment for all staff and students.

Mr. Nevil Balakrishna (Co-ordinator: Howard College DSU)

Nevil Balakrishna is the Disability Coordinator for the Howard College and Medical School Campuses since 2009. He has previously served on the Higher Education Disability Services Association (HEDSA). He is currently a member on a National Committee that is working to develop a Teaching and Learning Practice Framework in Higher Education for students with disabilities. He advocates for a rights-based approach to disability and is passionate about the empowerment of persons with disabilities. He has served in a managerial capacity in Non-Governmental Organisations for persons with disabilities. 


Ms. Faaiza Shaikh (Co-ordinator: Westville Campus DSU)

Currently completing a PHD in Psychology. Other qualification are MA (Social Work), MA (Gender Studies). Worked within the University Structure as part time Lecturer (Social work), Supervisor for 3rd and 4th year Social Work students in the placements, Disability Support Officer at Edgewood Campus amongst others.


Ms. Roshanthni Subrayen (Co-ordinator: Edgewood Campus DSU)

Roshanthni Subrayen (Ms.) is the Disability Support Unit Coordinator at UKZN Edgewood Campus School of Education. In addition to the various specialized services she provides to students with disabilities at this campus, she is passionate about access, participation and the retention of students with disabilities in their teaching practice placement. Importantly too, are the chalkboard access techniques that she put together with students with visual disabilities on innovative and creative techniques for negotiating and navigating the chalkboard in the teaching practice placements for students with visual disabilities. Ms Subrayen is a doctoral candidate at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Her research interests are on the lived experiences of access, participation and the retention of students with disabilities in higher education.


Ms. Yanga Futshane (Co-ordinator: Pietermaritzburg DSU)

A qualified Social worker. Has worked in the Disability Unit for 10 years. Previously worked in number of Non-profit organisations. Completed her Master’s Degree in Social work. The focus of her Master’s thesis was on employment experiences of Student with disabilities at UKZN.  Served in disability related regional and National structures.
